Spinal issues can impact your pet’s mobility, comfort and independence. We perform advanced spinal surgery for conditions like disc disease, trauma and neurological decline—supporting pain relief, functional recovery and long-term wellbeing with safe procedures and attentive post-operative care.

From fractures to ligament injuries, our orthopaedic surgeries focus on restoring mobility and reducing discomfort. Using techniques like TTA repairs and fracture fixation, we support healing so pets can move more freely and enjoy an improved quality of life.

Our team performs soft tissue surgeries including lump removals, cancer excisions and abdominal procedures. Each operation is approached with precision and care to support your pet’s comfort, recovery and long-term health outcomes.

Dental disease goes beyond bad breath—it can affect your pet’s entire body. Our veterinary dental surgeries include extractions, scaling and polishing to treat infection, reduce pain and support long-term heart, kidney and overall health.

We perform pet eye surgeries for issues like entropion, tumours and third eyelid prolapse. These procedures help relieve discomfort and preserve vision. Every treatment is tailored to your pet’s specific condition, with careful planning and post-op support from our veterinary team.

Breathing problems, chronic ear infections and other ENT issues can affect your pet’s comfort and wellbeing. We perform corrective surgeries, including BOAS treatment and ear canal ablations, tailored to each case to help improve daily function and overall quality of life.

Desexing supports reproductive health and population control in pets. It may reduce the risk of certain cancers and behavioural changes. This routine procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and contributes to your pet’s wellbeing across different life stages.

Newcastle Animal Surgery

At Westlakes Veterinary Hospital in Newcastle, we provide a wide range of surgical services, including orthopaedic and soft tissue procedures, tailored to support your pet’s comfort and long-term wellbeing. Surgical intervention can improve quality of life for pets affected by chronic pain, cancer or other conditions, and we aim to approach each case with care and clinical precision.

Dr. Josh is a very experienced small animal surgeon, having trained with a specialist surgeon in South Africa. His surgical and diagnostic skills are far reaching with expertise in the most advanced and complex surgical procedures. Referrals are welcomed directly by contacting the clinic or through your referring veterinarian, to provide the highest level of surgical care in your local area.

We use pre-anaesthetic blood testing to evaluate organ function and guide anaesthesia planning. Warmed IV fluids are administered to support circulation, with continuous monitoring of vital signs such as blood pressure, oxygenation, respiration rate and temperature. To maintain body heat and comfort during surgery, we use veterinary warming systems such as “hot dog” or “bear hugger” blankets.

Pain relief is managed through multi-modal pharmacological support tailored to your pet’s needs. All procedures are performed under strict sterile conditions to reduce the risk of infection.

Surgical Safety & Pain Management

We take a thoughtful, evidence-based approach to support your pet’s safety, comfort and recovery throughout their surgical experience. Before surgery, we conduct pre-anaesthetic blood testing to assess key organ function and evaluate any risks. During the procedure, we use advanced monitoring tools to track heart rate, oxygenation, blood pressure and temperature in real time. Warmed intravenous fluids and veterinary warming systems are used to maintain circulation and reduce the risk of shock.

Our anaesthetic protocols are customised for each patient using a balanced combination of short-acting medications. This helps minimise side effects and supports a smoother recovery process. Pain relief is managed proactively through a multi-step plan involving medications given before, during and after surgery.

Recovery takes place in a calm setting, with attentive care from our veterinary team. We provide post-operative instructions, appropriate pain relief and a follow-up schedule to monitor healing.

Our goal is to provide surgical care that reflects both clinical precision and genuine consideration for your pet’s wellbeing.
