Does your dog or cat have skin problems? Are they always scratching at themselves, biting at their own back or feet or constantly licking their feet? These issues are more common than you think in our area.
In Lake Macquarie we are lucky enough to be surrounded by many different types of plants and grasses and while this is beautiful to look at, many of our pets suffer from ongoing allergies to these plants without us even knowing.
There are many different things that can cause itchiness in our canine companions and allergies is one of our biggest culprits.
Some signs to look for if you think your dog may be suffering:
- Red or pink skin on their stomach, feet or groin
Pinkish red skin is telling us that the dogs skin is currently inflammed and could be quite uncomfortable, this is most commonly a reaction to something in the environment such as grass, plants or even some foods.
- Constant chewing or licking at their feet
You may either notice this by actually catching the dog in the act, or you may notice their usually light coloured feet are now a dark stained pink/ mauve or 'dirty' looking. This is due to saliva staining.
Your dog may be hyper excited (very excited) at odd times, this is due to the fact that they are extremely itchy all over their body and will tend to roll over to scratch their back and/ or face on the ground and run around without being tempted.
If you notice any of these signs in your dog or have any worries about their skin or allergies, please give us a call on (02) 4959 5766 and we can start an allergy management program with you and your pet.
